Privacy policy
Last updated: 29 September 2026
Owee helps you split bills with friends. To do that, it needs to know a little about you and your groups. This page explains what we collect, why, who helps us, and how to delete it.
The short version
- You sign in with your phone number. We don't ask for your email.
- No money moves through Owee. We never see your bank or card details.
- We don't sell your data, and Owee has no ads.
- Usage analytics are optional. You can turn them off in Settings.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time.
1. Who we are
Owee is operated by Satwik Agarwal, an individual based in India. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean Owee and its operator. "You" means anyone who uses the Owee app or this website.
Questions, requests or complaints: support@getowee.com.
2. What we collect and why
"Processed" means handled in some way: received, stored, read or sent on.
| What | Why | Where it's stored or processed |
|---|---|---|
| Your phone number | To sign you in with a one-time code sent by SMS, and so friends can add you to a group. | Supabase (India). The SMS is sent by our SMS provider. |
| Your name and default currency | So your friends know who you are in a group, and to show amounts in your currency. | Supabase (India) |
| Profile photo (optional) | Shown next to your name in your groups. We re-save the image, which removes hidden details such as location. | Supabase file storage (India) |
| Payment methods you add (optional) | So friends who owe you can pay you in their own app. You can add a UPI ID, a Cash App link, a PayPal.Me or Venmo username, or a phone number or email for Apple Cash, with a display name. | Supabase (India) |
| Groups, members, splits and amounts | This is the service: working out who owes whom. It includes group names, bill titles, items, amounts, who paid, and settle-ups. It also includes records of when you tap to pay someone and whether you said it went through. | Supabase (India) |
| Receipts, photos and PDFs you attach | So Owee can read a bill, and so your group can see it. Images are re-saved, which removes hidden details such as location. | Supabase file storage (India). Sent to OpenAI when you ask Owee to read them. |
| Messages you type to Owee (the AI) | So Owee can turn "dinner was ₹2,400, Riya had the fish" into a split. We don't store what you type. We keep Owee's reply and the draft split for up to 30 days, so a retry after a dropped connection gets the same answer. We keep the split you confirm. | Our API server (India), then OpenAI |
| Your voice | You can speak instead of typing. Your phone's built-in speech feature turns speech into text, and Owee asks it to do this on the device. Owee never receives the audio. Only the text reaches us, as a normal message. | On your phone |
| Contacts (only if you allow it) | When you add people to a group and allow contacts access, the app sends the phone numbers in your address book to our server to check which ones are already on Owee. It sends numbers only, not names. We don't store this list; we only answer "on Owee" or "not yet". We keep only the people you choose to add: their phone number and the name you give them. If they're not on Owee yet, we set up a placeholder account for that number, so the group is waiting for them when they join. | Our API server (India). People you add: Supabase (India). |
| Technical data | To stop abuse, we count requests per IP address and per device. We first turn the IP address into a scrambled code (a "keyed hash") so the counter doesn't hold the real address. We also keep short security records, such as "this account was refused access", tied to your account ID. | Supabase (India) |
| AI usage counts | How many Owee splits you used each day and what they cost us, to apply the free and fair-use limits. | Supabase (India) |
| Usage analytics | To see which screens people use and where things go wrong. See section 3. | PostHog (EU) |
| Owee Pro status | To know whether you have Pro. The app store handles payment. RevenueCat tells us if your subscription is active. We link the two using your Owee account ID. | Apple or Google, and RevenueCat (US) |
| Push notification token (iPhone only) | If you allow notifications on an iPhone, Apple gives the app a code (a "token") for sending notifications to that phone. We use it to tell you about things like new bills and payment reminders. When you log out, the app asks our server to delete it. Deleting your account deletes it too. | Supabase (India). Notifications are sent through Apple. |
Owee doesn't ask for your location, and doesn't use advertising IDs. Push notifications are only on iPhone for now. The Android app doesn't ask for a push token.
When you invite a friend by text, the app opens your own messages app. Owee does not send that text.
3. Usage analytics
We use PostHog to learn how the app is used. Analytics events are things like "split started" or "paywall viewed", plus counts and kinds. We don't send names, phone numbers, contacts, amounts, or anything you type or say. Session recording is off.
- If you share usage: events are linked to your Owee account ID, along with screen views, your phone number's country, basic device details that PostHog's app library sends (such as phone model and app version), and a rough location (city or country) that PostHog works out from your IP address.
- If you don't: we still send a few bare counts, such as "someone finished sign-up". Each one gets a new random ID, with no profile and no location lookup, so it can't be tied back to you.
Outside the US, the app asks you before sign-up, and sharing stays off until you say yes. In the US, sharing is on by default. Anyone can change this at any time in Settings > Share usage data.
4. Who helps us run Owee
These companies process data for us (they are our "processors"). Each gets only what it needs.
| Company | What it does | What it gets |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in and file storage. Hosted in Mumbai, India. | Everything stored in section 2. |
| Oracle Cloud | Runs our API server and this website, in Mumbai, India. | Your requests as they pass through. |
| OpenAI (US) | The AI model behind Owee. | Your messages to Owee, earlier messages in the same chat, receipts you attach, the names of people in the group, and the split so far. We send requests with OpenAI's storage option turned off. OpenAI doesn't use this data to train its models. It may keep it for up to 30 days to check for misuse of its service, then deletes it, unless the law requires it to keep it longer. |
| Twilio (US) | Sends sign-in codes by SMS, through Supabase. | Your phone number and the code. |
| RevenueCat (US) | Checks Owee Pro purchases with Apple and Google. | Your Owee account ID and your store purchase records. |
| PostHog (EU) | Usage analytics. | What's described in section 3. |
| Apple and Google | Take payment for Owee Pro, and speech-to-text on your phone. | Handled under their own privacy policies. We never see your card or bank details. |
| Apple Push Notification service | Delivers notifications to iPhones. | Your phone's push token and the notification's text, such as "4 expenses were added to your group". |
| Frankfurter | A free public service for exchange rates. | Only a currency code. Your phone asks it directly. |
We don't sell or rent your personal data. We don't share it for advertising. Owee has no ads and no ad tracking.
We may share data if the law requires it, for example a valid court order.
5. What other people in your groups can see
- Your name in that group and your profile photo.
- The splits in that group: items, amounts, who paid, who owes whom, and any receipts attached.
- Your payment methods, but only to someone who owes you money in a group you share, when they tap to pay you.
Group members don't see your phone number in the app. But if someone already has your number in their contacts, Owee can tell them you're on Owee.
6. How long we keep things
- Your account, groups and splits: until you delete your account (see section 7). Splits are a shared record, so they stay for the rest of the group.
- Rate-limit counters (with scrambled IP addresses): deleted after 1 day.
- Records that stop a request running twice (including Owee's chat replies): deleted after 30 days.
- Security records: deleted after 90 days.
- Sent notification records: deleted after 90 days. Your in-app notification list stays.
- People added by a friend who never join: if they're not part of any split, their number, name and placeholder account are deleted 30 days after they were added. If they're part of a split, they stay in that group's record. If that's you, email us and we'll help.
- Push tokens: deleted when you log out on that phone, and when you delete your account. We stop using a token when Apple tells us it no longer works.
- Uploads you never used: a receipt or photo that never became part of a split is deleted after 7 days.
7. Deleting your account
In the app: open Settings, tap Delete account, then swipe to confirm.
By email: write to support@getowee.com from the phone number's owner, and include the phone number on your account. We will check it's you before deleting anything. More help: Delete your account.
You can't delete your account while you still owe money, or are owed money, in a group. Settle up first. This keeps your friends' balances right.
What deletion removes
- You are signed out on every device, and your sign-in account is deleted.
- Your profile name becomes "Deleted user". Your phone number, UPI ID and profile photo are removed.
- All payment methods you saved under Settings > Payment methods are deleted.
- You leave every group. A group with no bills and no one else in it is deleted, with its files.
- Your iPhone's push token is deleted.
- Your Owee Pro customer record at RevenueCat is deleted.
- If you shared usage, your analytics profile and its events are deleted at PostHog.
What stays
- Splits you were part of stay in their groups, so other members' history and balances stay correct. They keep the name you had in that group, and any receipts attached to them.
- Records with only your account ID and no other details, such as AI usage counts, and security records (deleted after 90 days).
Deleting your account does not cancel an Owee Pro subscription. Cancel it in your App Store or Google Play settings.
8. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- See the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct it. You can edit your name, photo, phone number and payment methods in the app.
- Delete it (see section 7).
- Withdraw consent to analytics, in Settings > Share usage data. Contacts access can be turned off in your phone's settings.
Email support@getowee.com. We aim to reply within 30 days.
India (Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023): you also have the right to have your complaints handled, and to name someone to act for you if you die or can't act yourself. Our grievance contact is Satwik Agarwal, at support@getowee.com. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
EU and UK (GDPR): we use your data to provide the service you asked for (a contract), for our legitimate interest in keeping Owee safe, and with your consent for analytics. You can also object, ask for a copy in a portable format, and complain to your local data protection authority.
California: you can ask what we collect, and ask us to delete or correct it. We don't sell or "share" personal information for advertising. We won't treat you differently for using your rights.
9. Keeping your data safe
- The app talks to our servers over HTTPS, which encrypts data in transit.
- You can only see groups you belong to. The server checks this on every request.
- Secret keys for our providers stay on our server, never in the app.
- Receipts and photos are private files. The app gets a link to each one that stops working after 5 minutes.
No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a breach that affects you, we'll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
10. Children
Owee is for people aged 13 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has an account, we'll delete it. If you think this has happened, email us.
If you're between 13 and 18, you need a parent's or guardian's permission to use Owee. The app asks before collecting usage data in most countries, and you can say no. You can also turn it off later in Settings.
11. Data sent to other countries
Your data is mainly stored in India. Some providers process it elsewhere: OpenAI, Twilio and RevenueCat in the United States, and PostHog in the European Union. Apple and Google process store purchases under their own terms. By using Owee, you understand your data may be processed in these countries, where privacy laws may differ from yours.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Owee changes. We'll change the date at the top. If a change is important, we'll let you know before it takes effect.
