Groups
How do I create a group?
- On the Groups tab, tap New group.
- Give it a name. Tap the icon next to the name to change it.
- Add people with Add from contacts, or send them a link with Share a link.
- Tap Create group.
How do I add people?
Open the group, then tap Add people and pick friends from your contacts. You can also do this from the group’s settings (the gear).
People already on Owee join straight away. Everyone else is added by their phone number, and Owee offers to text them an invite. When they sign up with that number, the group is waiting for them.
How do invite links work?
In the group’s settings, tap Invite link. You can copy it or share it. Anyone with the link can join. Each link lasts 3 days.
On iPhone, tapping the link opens Owee and shows the group. Your friend taps Join. If they’re new, they sign up first and Owee takes them to the group after.
On Android, invite links open our website for now. Adding people by phone number works on every phone.
How do I leave or hide a group?
Open the group’s settings (the gear).
- Archive group hides it. Nothing is deleted.
- Leave group works once you are square. If you still owe or are owed money, settle up first.
Adding a split
How do I add a split?
- Tap + at the bottom of the screen.
- Tell Owee what happened, in plain words. For example: “Dinner was 2400, Riya had the fish.”
- Owee opens the bill, filled in. Check it.
- Tap Confirm.
In more than one group? Tap the group name next to the text box to choose the group.
Can I just type an amount?
Yes. Type only a number, like 450. Owee makes a bill for that amount, split equally between everyone in the group, paid by you. Change anything you need, then tap Confirm.
A plain amount doesn’t use one of your free Owee splits.
Can Owee read a receipt?
Yes. In the text box, tap + and choose Camera, Photos or PDF. You can add up to 8 files at once. Owee reads the items, tax and tips. You can add a few words too, like “I paid, Sam didn’t drink”.
Each receipt should be one bill. Send separate bills separately.
Can I say it instead of typing?
Yes. Tap the microphone and speak. Tap stop when you’re done. Your words appear in the text box, so you can fix them. Nothing is sent until you tap send.
Owee asked me a question
Sometimes Owee needs to know who had something, how much it was, or who paid. Tap one of the answers shown under the question. If Owee asks for a price, you can also just type it. Or fix that item on the bill by hand.
Fixing a split
How do I fix a bill before I confirm it?
- Tell Owee what to change, in the box at the bottom. For example: “Sam didn’t have beer.” This doesn’t use a free Owee split.
- Or tap a line to edit it. Swipe a line left to edit or delete it.
- Tap Add an item to add a line yourself.
- Tap a person at the top to tick what they had.
- Tap Paid by you to change who paid.
How do I change a split I already added?
Open the split and tap Change it. Make your changes and tap Confirm. Everyone’s balances update.
How do I remove a split?
Open the split, tap Undo it, then slide Swipe to undo. You can add a reason if you like. You can’t bring it back afterwards, but you can tap Split it again to start a new one.
Settling up
How do I settle up?
- Open the group and tap Settle up. Or tap a person in the group’s balances.
- The amount is filled in. Tap it to pay part of it.
- If you owe them, tap one of the payment apps they added, like UPI. Owee opens that app with the amount filled in. Pay there.
- Come back to Owee. It asks “Did it go through?” Slide if it did.
Paid in cash, or some other way? Use the slider Slide if you already paid. If they paid you, use Slide if … paid you.
To settle with someone across all your groups, tap Settle up on Home.
Does Owee move my money?
No. Owee never holds or sends money. It opens your payment app and records what you tell it happened. A payment only counts once you slide to record it.
Which payment apps work?
- Groups in ₹: UPI.
- Groups in $: Cash App, PayPal, Venmo and Apple Cash.
For other currencies, pay any way you like and record it with the slider.
How do friends pay me back?
Go to Settings → Payment methods and add your UPI ID or app handle. When a friend settles up with you, Owee shows them these. Nobody can take money with them. They can only send you money.
Can I remind someone?
Yes. On the settle-up screen, tap Remind and their name. You can remind each person once a day in each group.
What does Simplify debts do?
It gives your group the fewest possible payments, even between people who never split together. Say Asha owes Ben, and Ben owes Chris. With it on, Asha can pay Chris directly.
It’s on for new groups. Turn it on or off in the group’s settings. You can’t change it once someone has left the group.
Currencies
Which currencies does Owee support?
Indian rupee (INR), US dollar (USD), euro (EUR), British pound (GBP), Japanese yen (JPY) and Kuwaiti dinar (KWD).
How do currencies work in a group?
Each group uses one currency. New groups use your default currency. Set it in Settings → Default currency.
To change a group’s currency, open its settings and tap Currency. You can only do this before anything has been split.
My groups use different currencies. What’s the total on Home?
Home adds them up in your default currency at today’s exchange rate. It’s an estimate. Each group still settles in its own currency.
My receipt is in another currency
Owee tells you on the bill. Tap Convert to … to change the amounts at today’s rate, or Keep as … to use the numbers as printed.
Owee Pro and free splits
What’s free?
Your ledger is always free. Adding splits by hand, plain amounts, settling up and reminders never cost anything.
The free plan also includes 10 Owee splits a month. An Owee split is the first message to Owee on a new bill: typed, spoken or a receipt. Fixes on that same bill don’t count. Your free splits come back on the 1st of each month.
To see how many you have left, open Settings and look under Owee Pro.
What happens when I run out?
Owee offers two choices: Get Owee Pro, or Add by hand. Adding by hand is always free.
There’s also a small daily limit on the free plan. If you hit it, it comes back the next day.
What does Owee Pro include?
Unlimited Owee splits, within fair use. You can pay monthly or yearly. The app shows the price in your currency before you buy. There’s no free trial, because the free plan already lets you try Owee.
How do I cancel Owee Pro?
Your subscription is billed by Apple or Google, so you cancel it with them.
iPhone: open the Settings app → your name → Subscriptions → Owee → Cancel Subscription.
Android: open Google Play → your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Owee → Cancel subscription.
Or in Owee, go to Settings, and under Owee Pro tap Manage. It opens the store’s subscriptions page.
Deleting your Owee account does not cancel your subscription. Cancel it in the store too.
I bought Pro but don’t have it
Go to Settings and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you’re signed in to the same App Store or Google Play account you paid with. If it still doesn’t work, email us.
How do I get a refund?
Apple and Google handle refunds for purchases made through their stores. Ask them through the App Store or Google Play.
Your account
How do I change my name or photo?
Go to Settings and tap Edit next to your name.
How do I change my phone number?
- Go to Settings and tap Phone number.
- Type your new number and tap Send code.
- Type the code we text to the new number. Tap Verify and update.
You keep all your groups and splits. Until you enter the code, your account keeps the old number.
Will Owee send me notifications?
On iPhone, yes. After you sign in, Owee asks if it can send you notifications, for example when a friend adds a split or reminds you to pay. To change this later, go to Settings → Notifications in Owee. It opens your phone’s settings for Owee.
On Android, notifications aren’t available yet. Tap the bell on Home to see what’s new.
Can I turn off usage data?
Yes. Go to Settings and tap Share usage data to switch it on or off. It helps us see which screens work and where things go wrong. It never includes your bills or contacts. Read more in our privacy policy.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Delete account. See Delete your Owee account for the full steps and what gets deleted.
